About Our Organization
A volunteer-based organization, the Southwest Michigan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is located on the lower level of the West Michigan Cancer Center in Kalamazoo. Our mission is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening, and treatment. Our service area includes 8 counties in Southwest Michigan (Allegan, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, and Van Buren). Our overhead expenses are minimal, and up to 75% of the funds raised through events such as Race for the Cure are used to fund breast cancer education, screening and treatment projects in each of those counties. (Last year, working with other healthcare organizations, we were able to provide free mammograms through Pink Saturdays .) The other 25% is applied directly to grants funding national breast cancer research studies and fellowship grants.
In conjunction with other health care organizations, in 2007 we provided free mammograms to about 700 uninsured and underinsured women in Southwest Michigan. In 2008, working with more organizations, we hope to provide 2,000 free mammograms to uninsured and underinsured women in Southwest Michigan. Your support of Race for the Cure will make this possible.
